There’s nothing hidden about the beauty of San Diego. With year long sunshine, warm weather and beautiful beaches and hiking trails to boast, there is something for everyone. With that said, there are lots of hidden gems for one to explore in this magical city. It’s the hidden gems that truly make San Diego unique and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the US.
By all means, the popular tourist spots are a must see if you plan a visit to San Diego (see my top favorites here!) but to get a real feel for the culture, nature, and culinary experience, these hidden gems will make you feel like a local in no time. Check out my top 5 list below (and growing!) and have fun taking in the special gems that make this city the treasure it is.
5 Hidden Gems in San Diego
1. La Jolla Swings
A short hike up the hill from Expedition Way (above the Scripps Memorial Pier) and you’ll find yourself amongst the secret La Jolla Swings! Nestled within the trees on this hillside are not only fun swings fit for Instagram worthy photos but one of the most beautiful ocean views in the city. What’s fun about the swings is that they tend to change and evolve over time – from a tire swing, or wood plank swing with cool artwork or inspirational quotes. After photo time, take in the relaxing atmosphere and again, that view!
2. The Grass Skirt
If you’re a fan of speak easy’s this one’s for you. What a fun, vibrant and truly unique Tiki bar! Located in Pacific Beach, entering this gem through a seemingly normal Poke takeout restaurant appears confusing at first until you’re whisked through a restaurant freezer door and transported to a Tiki time capsule! The whole vibe, decor, cocktails, and food are out of bounds and a must try for any visitor or local alike. This has become a very popular spot over the years so a reservation is a must to avoid disappointment.
3. Sunny Jim Cave
Should you find yourself visiting the seals in La Jolla Cove, a fun hidden gem is not far from reach. Make your way down to The Cave Store, where the Sunny Jim Cave exists. I never knew this even existed until it was mentioned to me by a friend! The cave consists of a large 143-step man-made tunnel (a little scary and dark at first but it gets better!) that leads you to a beautiful ocean cave streaming with sunlight and kayakers in the distance. Admission is $10 to access the cave.
4. Civita Park Mural
I love taking my pup to the dog park at the Civita housing community and not far from it is a stunning mural that proudly represents the vibrancy and culture that is San Diego. Walk into a tunnel like structure decorated with the colorful pride of San Diego and make your way to the sunset view of the complex towards the end. I love what this mural represents and is another gift for tourists and locals to experience.
5. Buona Forchetta – South Park
I have all the good things to say about this restaurant! Specializing in Italian cuisine, Buona Forchetta’s menu of Neapolitan style pizza, fresh pastas, and seafood is by far the best I’ve had in the city! Although there are multiple locations, I love the South Park one particularly for is small and charming vibe and the fact that it’s nestled in the residential neighborhood of South Park. A must try!
