We all deserve a day of indulgence! With Covid shaking our lives to the core (and closing down most of our beloved spas) we’ve been forced to determine the most effective and efficient ways to keep up with our daily routines, including skincare. What’s great about this is that we’re actually taking more time for self-care! I love putting my best face forward and that includes maintaining a good skincare routine (check out my morning routine here and my nighttime routine here).
If you have no idea how to give yourself a facial, no need to fear! My step by step instructions below will leave your moneymaker feeling effortlessly refreshed and ready for your next selfie. No need for expensive skincare either! Most of what you’ll use will likely be right there in your beauty case. Take your self-care routine to the next level and feel relaxed and ready to take on your day in no time!
How to Give Yourself The Best Facial
Step 1: Set the mood. This step is so important in order to bring yourself to a state of calm and begin to allow yourself to distress. This will help to make your self-love treatment that much better! Dim the lights if you can, light your favorite scented candle or incense and press play on your favorite calming playlist. You’ll be in a state of relaxation in no time!
Step 2: Cleanse. Before you do grab your favorite cleanser, take a peak in the mirror first and ask yourself ‘what does my skin need today?’. Do you feel particularly dry, oily, or currently dealing with breakouts? Choose your favorite cleanser that will help target what your money maker is in need of that day. Try something gentle for sensitive, acne-prone skin, or something with a little more treatment in it to target oil and blackheads. If using a facial scrub is your thing, feel free to reach for that after your cleanser.
Step 3: Mask it up. Like your cleanser, you’ll want your mask to reflect what your skin truly needs at that moment. Feeling dry, try a mask with aloe or extra hydration. Too oily? A charcoal mask is great for soaking up that excess oil and dirt. Apply liberally to your face using a mask brush, take a comfortable seat or lay down and close your eyes (maybe even apply cucumber slices to your eyes if you’re feeling fancy!). Be sure to follow the instructions for how long you should keep the mask on (each one can be different!). Using a face cloth soaked in warm water, gently press on your face for a few moments and wipe the mask off completely. Now you’re ready for the next step!
Step 4: Tone. Using a toner is a great way to pick up that extra oil or dirt left behind or target that pesky blemish. You can even choose to make your own toner for a more natural approach. Start my adding hot water to 2-4 green tea bags and let steep for 10 minutes. Place this in the fridge to cool and apply to your face using a cotton pad. You can even use a spray bottle instead to mist on your face (great on a warm summer’s day!). Green tea in particular boasts wonderful anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties (great for my acne prone ladies out there!).
Step 5: Moisturize! A huge and important step to maintain our precious moisture barrier. Grab your favorite moisturizer (this could even be a concoction you’ve whipped up in the kitchen) and apply liberally. Take the time to truly let this absorb and work it’s magic before proceeding with the rest of your day or applying makeup. Now take a final look in the mirror and marvel at your freshly spa-ified face a la you!
