Simply put, Australia is dreamy. I especially enjoyed my time in Sydney – a truly laid back yet vibrant city that provides it’s visitors with endless possibilities. Taking myself back to over 7 years ago now, I found myself roaming the trees of Sydney, taking in the beautiful architecture and, of course, the weather. As someone in my early twenties at the time, I felt a sense of peace as I explored what the city had to offer. Whether you’re active or looking to take your vacation at an easier pace, Sydney has what you’re looking for!
Like with other major cities, it’s not hard to find yourself amongst other travelers who are also on an Australian adventure of their own. Whether you’re traveling alone (like I did!) or with a group, Sydney will surely make an impression on you to last a lifetime. Read on (in no particular order) for my brief, yet crucial must-dos in the ultimate New South Wales Capital!
Australia Highlights: Sydney
1. Sydney Opera House
Whether you’re an opera buff or not, the Sydney Opera House is a must see. With it’s Expressionist features, this building truly shines in the harbour. During the day, admire the bright sunlight bouncing off the ‘shells’ while at night, you can admire the bright patterns and colors off the building via the light show. Regardless of the time of day, being around the harbour in general is a peaceful way to explore the area, architecture, shops, and more! Stop for a cocktail or simply find a bench along the edge of the bay for people watching.
2. Harbour Bridge Climb
This is a MUST do! Although this may not be for everyone (if you’re afraid of heights, you may need to sit this one out!) but, this is truly the best activity to not only get your cardio in for the day but to admire breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the entire city. To say this was one of the highlights of my Sydney adventure would be an understatement. Climbing the bridge itself is not a simple task, weaving through tight crossings and ducking through small openings, it’s hard to believe how you’ll ever get to the top but, once you’re there, it’s worth all of the effort! The views are spectacular and your guide will be happy to point out celebrity houses while giving you a Sydney history lesson.
3. Taronga Zoo Sydney
Who doesn’t love a good zoo with animals galore! Especially one where Kangaroos are leisurely hopping along your path. With an optimal location along the harbour, the Taronga zoo is a short ferry ride away and features Red Kangaroos, Koalas and more. Take your time to explore the exhibits (both enclosed and interactive) while making new furry friends.
4. Bondi Beach
Another short ferry ride away will lead you to Australia’s iconic beach, Bondi. With beautiful white sands, clear waters, and waves to make any surfers dream come true, this beach is the ultimate Sydney destination. If lounging along a stunning beach is not your thing (really, I need to know who you are!), then feel free to explore the many shops and/or the healthy cafes for a fuel up or break from the sun. This alone proves that Sydney truly does have it all!
5. The Rocks
No I’m not talking about boulders or rock climbing here, The Rocks is an historical neighbourhood in Sydney offering a vintage vibe and ‘peek-a-boo’ view of the Harbour Bridge in the distance. Enjoy the food and art markets or visit some of the oldest pubs in Sydney for a pint. If you happen to be a traveler staying in the YHA Sydney Rocks hostel, they offer a free tour of the archeological site the hostel itself is built on – super cool!
