Following a wonderful NYE trip throughout the UK, I found myself at the tale end of my trip with yet to explore the wonderful city of London (what?!). I know what you’re thinking, considering most people would begin a UK adventure in London, why haven’t I done that? The nature of my UK tour had led us throughout many wonderful, less visited cities in the UK so, naturally, London found itself at the bottom of the list. With that said, I had only ONE day to soak up the popular UK city and I was bound to explore as much as possible!
If you find yourself at the tale end of your trip in London, or know you’ll be there on a layover on your next vacay, this one’s for you! Read on for the best way to explore this vibrant city!
1. Buckingham Palace
You only have a day so what better then to explore on foot and, honestly, what’s better than visiting a real life palace? Not only is there so much historical significance here and the home of THE Queen herself, you can imagine yourself engrossed in the royal hospitality emanating from the environment. The Green Garden is so perfectly kept and a beautiful, lush welcome to this significant British architecture. Stick around to catch the Changing of the Guards – a world famous historic tradition!
2. Big Ben
At the north of the Westminster, you’ll find the ever popular Big Ben. A beautiful, Gothic tower that boasts the largest clock face in the world. Admire the stature of this grand clock here and listen for it’s famous chime! While you’re at it, head over to the beautiful Westminster…
3. Westminister Abbey
You’re next stop is to one of the most notable religious buildings for the Brits and, of course, home to many famous Royal weddings (including the nuptials of the ever popular William and Kate!). Admire the stunning Gothic facade and imagine yourself as a wedding guest amongst British royalty! In addition, take a quick stroll through Parliament Square here to admire statues of world famous political leaders like Winston Churchill and Ghandi.
4. London Eye
Take a glance along the River Thames and you’ll notice the ever prominent London Eye – the tallest cantilevered observational wheel in Europe! Originally intended as a temporary attraction, it was later granted permanent status after it’s growing popularity! If time allows, take a ride to admire the views at one of the highest points of London!
5. Tower Bridge
Across the River Thames is the iconic symbol of London, the Tower Bridge! Take a quick drive across the bridge and admire the details, especially the pale blue color (my favorite and the Queen’s fav too!). Alternatively, you can head up one of the twin towers to check out the Tower Bridge exhibition. Call it pretentious or gaudy, it’s one of the most significant bridges in London and is definitely a must see!
6. Leicester Square
Finish off your fulfilling day with the energetic Leicester Square! Find yourself amongst the hustle and bustle of London while surrounded by endless shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas and more! If you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself amongst Hollywood royalty at the next big film premiere – what this square is truly famous for!
